Milne Bay: Economy

Less than 10% of the local population are in full time employment and most rely on subsistence farming and fishing. There is very little manufacturing in the area other than the production of banana boats for Yamaha. Boats are also built from timber. Exports include marine and timber products, palm oil, minerals, spices, coffee, cocoa and other agricultural products.

There are plenty of handicrafts made in the province as Milne Bay people are extremely creative. Milne Bay carvers are well known for ornate bowls, walking sticks and carvings and there are a number of people screen printing and tailoring clothes. Woven baskets and mats are plentiful and can be found at the market or in artefacts outlets. We also have a local producer of herbal creams and soaps made from traditional medical plants that are sold all over the country.

In the interests of conservation, the Government is pursuing a policy of eco tourism to bring development to the rural areas and to encourage villagers to participate in this industry.

Currency
Kina (PGK) and Toea are names taken from the shells that traditionally were used as currency.
