Milne Bay: Health Information
Malaria is endemic in Milne Bay and visitors are advised to consult their doctors for anti malarial drugs before travelling here. Sprays are available locally as are mosquito nets for those travelling out of town. Town water is safe to drink.
Our Provincial hospital has been voted one of the best provincial hospitals in the country. There are a number of good doctors available, but like all Government hospitals in PNG, there is often a shortage of drugs and equipment. However, the Pharmacy is quite well stocked. Ausaid has put quite a bit of infrastructure in place and has upgraded the hospital facilities. St Barnabas School of Nursing is one of the few nursing schools that remain in the country and is administered by the churches.
Vaccinations
All travellers should be vaccinated against tetanus and diphtheria no matter where they are travelling to. For PNG, it is wise to be covered against Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid Fever and Japanese B Encephalitis.
Insurance
It is recommended that you have travel insurance that specifically covers you for diving, fishing, trekking, bushwalking or whatever activities you might take while in PNG as well as the normal health and loss cover and medivac. One should be aware that most private hospitals in PNG expect cash up front.
