Milne Bay: Religion

Most people are committed Christians although they also adhere to traditional beliefs. Sundays remain days when shops are closed and public transport ceases so that families go to church in the mornings and relax or play sports in the afternoons.

In 1848 Catholic Marist Brothers landed on Woodlark Island. In 1891 Methodist landed on Dobu Island and adopted Dobu as the language to spread the gospel, The Dobu Island Church was built in 1929.

In the same year the Anglicans landed in Dogura, built a chapel and adopted the Wedau language. The Anglican Cathedral of St Peter & St Paul was built in Dogura. Milne Bay's first Anglican martyr is buried at Taupota.

The London Missionary Society arrived at Kwato and adopted Suau as the language of instruction for home economics, boat building skills and spreading of the gospel.

Others represented are the SDAs, the Jehova's Witnesses, the Pentecostals, the Assemblies of God and various other smaller churches. The Papua New Guinean Council of Churches is strong and active and exerts an influence over the town.

The churches all welcome visitors who want to join in worship. The United Church has a famous choir and the Sunday singing is a must for anyone who enjoys Pacific harmonies. If you do not want to go inside the Church you can always sit on the wall outside and enjoy the singing.
