Milne Bay is famous for its art and design from sophisticated ebony and kwila carved bowls inlaid with pearl shell or walking sticks and stools with intricate Polynesian designs to canoe prows, figures, grass skirts, tapa (bark) cloth, mats, baskets, lime pots, obsidian axe heads and shell ornaments.

The ebony wood comes from the Woodlark and Trobriand islands. It is a protected species and highly prized among the carvers from these islands.

There is a strong culture of making clay pots which are very much a part of Milne Bay daily life as these are used in every household to cook food in coconut cream. Most Milne Bays believe the food from the clay pot tastes better than food cooked in a metal pot. The best pots come from the Amphlett, Wari and Brooker Islands.

Woven mats, baskets and purses are a good buy in the market. Jewellery made from seeds and shells is worth looking at as well as the screen printed T shirts and handicrafts made by the youth. There are also paintings as well as cards made from hand made paper.

Minnie Bate makes soap from coconut oil and palm oil with herbal additives that are good for the skin. She also makes creams and medical preparations from traditional herbs taught to her by her grandmother. She lives just opposite Kedu’s Trading in Goilanai.

Check out Barbara’s Fashion Shop at Masurina Business Centre for local jewellery, Kedu’s Trading in Goilanai for artifacts and bagi and Napatana Lodge for artifacts.
