Heritage & Lifestyle

Milne Bay people are known for their friendliness and hospitality. They have had contact with the outside world for a long time as a seafaring people and because the islands straddle a major shipping route. Over the years, Milne Bay Province has been visited by a diverse group of people ranging from missionaries, scientists, pearl traders to Japanese and Allied troops. The battle for Milne Bay in 1942 saw the Allied troops defeat the Japanese, in one of the most decisive campaigns of the war, being the first major battle that the Japanese lost.

As a mainly matrilineal society, land passes through the female line and women enjoy a status unknown in other provinces on the mainland. Women have a unique role as landowners, peacekeepers, conservationists and guardians of the old customs. This makes Milne Bay culture very special.
