In the Water
Milne Bay is home to some of the world's most spectacular diving. It is dubbed the "underwater photographer's paradise" with many international award-winning photos being taken in PNG waters.
Located in the Indo-Pacific area, experts say that PNG has up to twice as many marine species as the waters of the Red Sea and up to five times as many as the Caribbean, all of them found in Milne Bay.
The topography, both above and below the surface of the water lends itself to three exciting ways to dive. Steep drop-offs along the north-eastern shore allow for spectacular wall diving, with frequent encounters with the larger pelagic such as whale sharks, hammerheads and manta rays. The wash off areas and bays along this coast also offer the diver the unique opportunity to do muck diving, discovering many strange and rare critters that thrive in this habitat and most of which do not inhabit larger reef formations. Finally, the spectacular reef pencils play host to a kaleidoscope of both soft corals and a variety of colorful marine life that is hard to imagine.
Divers enjoy a huge diversity of dive sites including barrier reefs, coral walls and gardens, patch reefs, fringing reefs, sea grass beds, coral atolls, and wreck dive sites. The wreck sites provide a collection of ships, aircraft and submarine wrecks from World War II.
