The Battle of Milne Bay

Milne Bay was invaded by the Japanese in 1942 as an important landing stage to attack Australia. They were defeated in 1942 by the Australians, Americans and other allies and this was the first defeat the Japanese sustained in the Pacific.

There are plenty of war relics around and Milne Bay Magic offers a wonderful half-day war tour. There are also Memorials around Alotau and these are maintained by Napatana Lodge at the request of the Australian Department of War Graves. There are five main tracks across the mountains to the north coast that were used by the military during the war to catch troop ships on the north coast to join the troops in Oro Province.

If you do not want the gruelling challenge of the Kokoda track, you can do a one-day trek across the ranges from Alotau.
