Cave Exploration
All over Milne Bay there are skull caves where the skulls of the dead were kept in pre-missionary days. These may be visited but it is very important to respect these sacred sites and to look but not touch. Photography is permitted.
There are plenty of limestone caves around Alotau that are the home to nine species of bat as well as spiders, snakes, frogs, toads and other small animals such as bandicoots.
Milne Bay Magic organises half-day tours from Alotau to see these local caves. On the north coast at Dabora, near Cape Vogel, there are huge caverns and caves running for several kilometres under the ground. The caves at Taupota are where Japanese hid themselves during the war after escaping over the ranges. There are plenty of underwater caves off the coast at Kaibola on Kiriwina Island and fresh water caves all over the island.
