Milne Bay Magic Tours

Milne Bay Magic is a locally owned and highly professional tour operator, and the first to start in the province. The guides excel in war history tours and have been said to offer some of the best war heritage tours in PNG.

Catering for the independent and group traveller, Milne Bay Magic offers short or extended tours which cover a range of special interest activities around Alotau and surrounding areas. Tours can be customised to suit individual interests or time frame.

Half-Day Tours include:
  • Highlights of Alotau
This tour introduces the visitor to the significant points of interest in Alotau and ends up in a village setting under the Sterling Ranges to sample local delicacies and to learn about the matrilineal system of landownership, landownership rights and obligations as well as our burial and marriage rituals.
  • War Relic and History Tour
This is basically a journey down memory lane that will give the visitor an insight into the conditions, tragedies and triumphs that took place during the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942. This episode of Milne Bay history is significant because it is where the Japanese Imperial army suffered its first land defeat in the whole South West Pacific War.
  • Bat Cave Expeditions
This cave is a must for those looking for adventure. One should be prepared to get muddy and wet feet but the experience of watching thousands of bats exiting all those chambers in the cave makes it a worthwhile.
  • Bird Watching Tours
These range from a village setting to forest walking tracks in and around town or on the fringe of the rainforest clad hills bordering the township. This can be a half day or a full day tour. Goldie bird watching can be organised through Saidowai Guest House on Normanby Island.
  • Bushwalking Tours
Depending on one's level of fitness and preference, these walks can be taken as a leisurely stroll or fitness walk. The walks will lead along rivers, through the rich vegetation of our tropical rain forests and through traditional gardens.

Full-Day Tours include:
  • East Cape
The most easterly point of mainland PNG, is one of the three maritime navigational entrances into the Port of Alotau where the merging tides of the Solomon and the Coral Seas meet. Ten minutes away is a sacred plot where the skulls of significant members, leaders and warriors of the community were laid to rest in the old days.
  • Wagawaga South Adventure
Discovery Bay, named by Captain John Moresby in 1873, is a picturesque inlet embraced by a rugged mountainous landscape. The beach is a good picnic spot and has black sand that glistens with fool’s gold and is perfect for swimming and exploring the sunken MV Muscoota. Visitors can venture into the mountains for an optional one hour trek to the waterfall or an even longer walk to see the moonstones (Dawanawalai).
  • Samarai and Kwato Islands Tour
Set in the China Straits, one of the oldest trade routes in the Pacific, Samarai was once the headquarters of Milne Bay and is a picturesque 54 acre island. What now remains of the island is a small settlement, a few shops and signs of a colonial past. Kwato Island, twenty minutes to the South of Samarai, is also a small unique island and is said to have one of the oldest known buildings in PNG.
  • Overnight Stays
Overnight stays can be organised either at Doini Island or at the MBMT hideout at Nigila. Both are secluded places and can offer a relaxed atmosphere for anyone wishing to unwind. Doini Island Resort is a great place to stay on these islands.

In addition to the half-day or longer tours, Milne Bay Magic also offers kayaking and horse riding, which will also be offered at Doini once completed.
