Milaa Mala
It is impossible to put a date on the Trobriand Islands yam festival as it depends on the harvest, the moon and when the Paramount Chief declares the day.
Traditional Culture cannot be tailored to suit tourism and tourists need plenty of notice to plan their travel arrangements. By way of compromise, Butia Lodge on Kiriwina Island has organised six villages around it to stage an annual festival for visitors to the island to see what happens at the Milaa Mala festival.
This will always be on the Wednesday and Thursday or the second week in July each year.
